Hiphop For Society is a immensely popular, community event organised by Breakdance Project Uganda(BPU). It takes place every year in January and brings together hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate creativity, talent and community spirit. The event is an exciting combination of live performances, interactive workshops, inspiring speeches, educational discussions, video screenings and photo exhibitions. BPU works in close collaboration with multiple local and international artists and organisations.
This year’s theme was ‘Dreams’ and featured artists and development specialists like; Anne Whitehead, J-Tight & Kakande, Caroline Nantume, Scooter Beatboxer, Interaid Uganda refugee youth, Julius Lugaya, Lilian & Key, Platform Uganda, Joana Jojo & In Movement alumni, Saint-NellySade, People Concern Children’s Project(PCCP), Vizurii Dance Crew, In Movement art for social change, Inspirationz dance company, Butterfly Uganda, Khamara Ashnan, Ruyonga, Jora & Young Artists Exchange Project(YEAP), Krump UG, Sylvester & Abramz.
We are proud to announce that we did it again: managed to successfully engineer yet another edition of Break-fast Jam. As usual the season lasted for several months and involved regional preliminary events from where breakers qualified to represent at the grand finale that took place at Sharing Youth Centre, Nsambya. We had quite a hefty hiphop lot come through and celebrate with us. This time the event lasted for two days at the same venue. We were very pleased that our fans stayed with us all the way to the end.
Break-fast Jam is becoming more cosmopolitan every year. This time we had b-boys & B-girls from around East Africa, D.R Congo, Japan & Switzerland travel down and represent their countries and exhibit what they could do. We commend all participants especially for being so involved and expressing so much enthusiasm and appreciation for Break-fast Jam hence widening and strengthening the community across East Africa. We hope to have the rest of Africa join us soon enough as we elevate the breaking culture across the continent.
We had several categories at the event including: 7 to smoke, three on three, kids battle (one on one), b-girl (one on one) and Popping. All the battles were restlessly intense which strongly portended the rapid development of the breaking scene in the East African region. For the third time Sky won the 7 to smoke battle. Blazing Flo crew won the 3 on 3 battle. Paul won the kids battle. Joan won the b-girl battle. Vincent won the popping battle.
